New Principal for DTMS

Dr. Michael Smith has been named as the new principal at The Downtown Middle School.  Dr. Smith has 36 years experience as an educator.  He has taught in elementary, junior high, middle school, high school, small college, and major university.  Dr. Smith's travels have seen him working in both public and private schools--and more importantly he has been an administrator in charter schools.  A native of West Virginia, Dr. Smith holds a BA degree from Glenville State College, an MA from Western Michigan University, and an Ed.D. from The University of Sarasota. He was a career football coach before going into charter school administration. Dr. Smith is excited about the opportunity to lead the school for many years.

Scholastic Book Fair coming to DTMS!

Ms. Johnson will be organizing the Scholastic Book Fair this year. The date is Friday, April 30th and will continue to run May 3rd - May 7th (Monday through Friday). It will be stationed on the 8th grade floor. There will be a family event on May 4th before the concert from 6pm to 7pm.

Flyers will be going out next Thursday requesting volunteers to help with this week-long event along with a scholastic flyer. Each grade level Language arts class will have an opportunity to visit the book fair and Parents can also help with contributing to the Book Fair with a donation to the Teacher to purchase classroom reading materials. This would be a great Teacher appreciation gift! Teacher Appreciation week is also May 3rd - May 7th.

I would like to thank Talesha Beamon for her coordination of this event and our newest volunteer Kimble McEachern for donating food and assisting with serving and clean up. I have attached pictures to share with everyone, it was a blast and we all had a great meal, lots of laughs and too much chocolate cake..lol..

The Downtown Middle School PTO wishes all the staff and faculty a very Happy Easter!

DTMS Adopts the Strollway!

DTMS is now part of the Adopt-A-Park Program!  Mr. Stilphen from Keep Winston-Salem Beautiful will make a sign that says The Downtown Middle School has adopted "THE STROLL WAY".  It will be placed behind our school on a pole located at the break of the stroll way (the entrance into the bankruptcy court) and will be displayed for 4 years. DTMS is committed to picking up trash and debris along the Strollway once every 3 months.

This will be another opportunity for parents to volunteer on the weekends beginning in
March and throughout the next upcoming year.

Winston-Salem Foundation provides funds for the

new Downtown Middle School 21st Century Classroom!

Through the generosity of the A. F. Clement Fund and the Jessica T. Fogle Fund from the Winston-Salem Foundation, students at the Downtown Middle School will soon have access to a 21st Century Classroom.  In a 21st Century Classroom technology is used to enhance learning rather than students learning to use the technology.

When a teacher takes his or her students to the 21st Century Classroom the teacher will instruct with the aid of a Polyvision Eno New Generation Interactive white board  and an Epson PowerLite 410W multimedia projector. Each student will use an Acer One Netbook which is capable of wirelessly interacting with the teaching station, interactive whiteboard, or internet.

The foundation has also provided two additional Eno White Boards that may be used in the 21st Century Classroom or moved from classroom to classroom as needed.

DTMS to Begin Recycling Program

Beginning this week, recycling bins will be placed in all core classrooms and in 2 encore classes on the 7th grade floor (computer, art), as well as the workroom and other locations. These bins were provided at no cost from the City of Winsto-Salem. Angel Cordoni, PTO President, has arranged to have our recycled items (paper and cardboard) to be picked up FREE of charge each week. This free service includes 3 ninety-six gallon roll carts that have been placed in our cafeteria. The students will be involved with this program through curriculum and doing their part in the classroom. You can get even more information about DTMS's recycling program by downloading this flyer. Students can also read more about Recycling by visiting the NC Recycle Guys web site.
