5th Grade

Welcome to 5th grade! I  hope you are ready to learn and have a fun and challenging year. Below I have listed the policies and content of each subject for the first quarter.

Writing:  We will be doing writer's workshop for the entire year. You will be able to write about anything you want!  You will have a chance to conference with peers, conference with me, and follow a process that will make you all wonderful writers!

Reading:  The class will be broken up into 3 groups and will participate in literature circles. They will discuss various novels chosen by the teacher and the student. Literature circles are student guided.  Every 5th grader is responsible for reading at least 30 minutes per night.  Two book reports per quarter will also be assigned.  You may check out any books in the classroom library for a two week period.

Math:  Students will begin with place value.  After a few months, the class will also have a chance to participate in math groups to work on their strengths, weaknesses, and personal interests.

Science:  Students are going to be studying weather during the first quarter.  Various labs will be done both by the student and teacher.  Homework will be on an as needed basis.

Social Studies: 5th grade will be studying US History.  Students will be assigned a state to study for the year and will be asked to complete a state project.  More information about this is to come!
